All your questions about EMS are answered here. Follow one of these links or just scroll down...
Who can join EMS?
Anybody can join EMS. You don't have to be doing Engineering, you don't have to be a Melbourne Uni student... actually you don't even have to be a student at all!
How can I join?
That's easy – just come to one of our rehearsals. Alternatively, visit our table at the Clubs & Societies Days on the Thursday or Friday during Orientation Week (Week Zero) at the end of February.
Do I have to audition?
No. We don't ever hold auditions for parts.
What ensembles do you have?
At the moment our main ensembles are an orchestra, a concert band, two stage bands and a choir.
When are rehearsals?
Each of our main ensembles rehearses weekly during semester:
- Orchestra: Mondays 5:45-8:00pm, Engineering "D" Block, room D207
- Choir: Tuesdays 6:00-8:00pm, Engineering "D" Block, room D207 (venue to be confirmed).
- Tuesday Stage Band: Tuesdays 5:45-8:00pm, IDTC Foyer at the back of Old Engineering "A" Block
- Concert Band: Wednesdays 5:45-8:00pm, Engineering "D" Block, room D207
- Thursday Stage Band: Thursdays 6:00-8:00pm, IDTC Foyer at the back of Old Engineering "A" Block
Rehearsals include a break (with food/drinks provided), and afterwards we head to the pub (our pub of choice for specials is The Corkman) for dinner and drinks. Everyone in EMS is friendly, so come along to get to know some other people!
When do rehearsals start?
Rehearsals for all ensembles (except for choir) begin in week 1 of the Melbourne University semester. For first semester 2009, this is the week beginning Monday 2nd March. Choir starts in week 2 on Tuesday 10th March.
What should I bring to rehearsal?
Yourself, your instrument, and a music stand if you've got one (we have some, but not always enough for everybody).
Do I have to have my own instrument already?
Generally yes, although we may be able to assist with some of the more expensive/large things like tubas, percussion, double bass, bass clarinet, bari sax, amps, keyboard, etc.
Do I have to pay to join EMS?
Anybody is welcome to come to a few rehearsals and see whether they like it or not. But even if you stick around, we think our membership fees are pretty good value for money. It's only $12 for new members, and if you're a student union (UMSU) member as well, then it's a bargain at $6. Membership lasts for the whole year.
Do you hold performances at all?
Yes. At the end of each semester we have a public concert for the orchestra, concert band and choir, usually somewhere like Wilson Hall at Melbourne Uni. We have a gig for the stage bands too – past venues to be graced by EMS include Bennett's Lane, Don't Tell Tom, The Cornish Arms and The Bull and Bear. Then from time to time our ensembles play at other events as well.
Do you do anything other than music?
Yes! EMS has a strong social side to it. Aside from the regular post-rehearsal pub nights, there are club-organised camps, BBQs and end-of-semester parties. There's also a social email list where members organise anything (and everything) from parties, movie nights, bike trips, picnics, and of course, extra pub trips!
How can I find room D207?
It's a tricky one! Room D207 is on the second floor of D Block of Engineering (map ref L17 in the university map). Your best bet is to enter via the stairwell/lifts between C and D Blocks, from the north side of the building only. Note that the corridor from E Block is not accessible without a swipe card, so we suggest you don't go that way.
Where is your office?
Have a look at this map. It's at the back of the Old Engineering Building, just off the IDTC foyer. We share the office with some other student clubs, but there's usually someone from EMS floating around as well.
